Subject:Cant figure out this mark?
Posted By: Chris Thu, Apr 05, 2018 IP: 98.238.74.148 Hey everyone, I have no idea what this large character mark means on the side of this vase. It seems like an early piece. Any insight? |

Posted By: TK Fri, Apr 06, 2018 It’s the character Yào (要), which has a general meaning of to want / need. It may have implied that whatever was stored inside the bottle was something the owner would want, or something that would be needed in day to day life. I wasn’t able to find any other examples of it being used on ceramics online, so this is just a theory. |

Posted By: Martin Michels Fri, Apr 06, 2018 If it's Japanese it's 要 Yö (ON-reading) or Kaname (KUN-reading), meaning something like: Need, Necessay, Main Point. |
