Subject:Export?
Posted By: Kathy Metzger Thu, Mar 08, 2018 IP: 98.15.190.25

We've had this for about 40 years. It has 9 fish on it. It measures about 9" high and 9" in diameter.
Can you please tell its age and me if this is Chinese export?
Or whatever it is. It's not marked anywhere.
We love it.
Thank you.
Kathy

I would guess this jar to date from the late 2nd to early 3rd quarter of the 20th century, or mid-century in other words. It is well painted, so far as the goldfish go, but the enamels and/or firing are deficient, leaving a great deal of puddling of the yellow ground.

The fish are very like those that were being painted in the 1920's on the popular pattern shown below on an 8-inch plate.

Best regards,

Bill H.

I should have added, compared to the average kitchen Qing wares, your jar is downright ritzy. while a jar with these defects of glazing and firing might have been culled from the stack going to Western countries, there were plenty of markets around Southeast Asia that would have welcomed them for domestic sale I believe. This is something I'd hide in plain sight and love for its warts. :)

Best regards,

Bill H.

And here's a 6.75inch-diameter ogee dish from the Daoguang period (1821-50). Probably had a cover originally. The painting is somewhat finer, I think, but not much. Overall fairly consistent treatment of the ornamental goldfish. Your fish aren't far removed.

Best regards,

Bill H.
