Subject:Small Qianlong marked bowl?
Posted By: RobT Tue, Feb 27, 2018 IP: 120.29.49.207

Hi once again, this piece is from the small collection purchased by my father at an Estate auction in the mid 1950’s. The owner had been a friend who at spent time in China as a Missionary around the turn of the century, 1900. This piece has the Qianlong mark however it is in red with no surrounding frame. Would I be correct in assuming that this is a copy from a latter period? Many thanks for any assistance. Rob

There appears to be some slippage between the treatment of the figures and traditional Chinese painting style. On the other hand, the sgraffito design and floral painting are technically alright, as is the calligraphy. I believe this may add up to manufacture in the decades of the 1940s and 50s, when the Jingdezhen kilns were in a state of flux.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Hi Bill, I really appreciate your comments and observations on the bowl. Although I can remember my father telling me about the owner being a missionary in China and I have the auction receipt that is dated 26th December, 1954 I have no idea if he continued to collect once he returned to Australia. I vaguely recall that the items were gifts but I am not certain. Unfortunately my father passed away many years ago so I have no access to further information. It’s fascinating and once again thank you so much for taking the time to comment, Best regards, Rob
