Subject:Old silk scroll 8 Horses in ink
Posted By: Tamara Thu, Feb 15, 2018 IP: 96.52.149.11

Hello, I inherited this scroll from my father, I've loved this painting since I was a child but I've never known the artist. It's huge, like 6 feet long. I think its traditional Mandarin but I can't read it. Can someone please tell me what it says? Also it has a couple tears and I'm nervous about should I restore it? Or please any suggestions!!
Thank you, I appreciate any and all input! :)

Subject:八駿圖 A picture of eight spirited horses

The title of this painting from right to left is
八駿圖 A picture of eight spirited horses
please note that the middle character 駿 jun is with horse as its left radical, 駿 means a spirited horse. (no pun intended)

I initially could not locate all eight horses in your painting until I looked closely. Heads of two horses were hiding behind the herd in the middle (on back) and in the middle at the front, two horses were merged together.

The name of the artist sounds like the name of a lady painter but the calligraphy is more like the works of a male artist. The execution of the horses, IMHO, is just average but its size, if indeed six feet, is quite difficult to execute. I do strongly advise you to have it framed properly if you do treasure it and intend to pass it as a family heirloom though. In its current condition, I am not sure how long it would last.
