Subject:Very strange satsuma? charger, identification help
Posted By: Tom Aspden Wed, Feb 14, 2018 IP: 87.114.143.116

I recently bought this large plate off Ebay and I believe that it was made in kyoto but I'm not sure. Does anyone know who made this and when it was made? (Note that some of the foliage and the rim of the plate is gilt?

The mark of this Kyoto-ware reads from right to left: Dai Nippon 大日本 Kyoto 亰都 Yoshioka 吉岡 Zo 造 (Great Japan - Kyoto - Made by Yoshioka).
See my picture below.

I have not been able to find anything about this Yoshioka on the web, so maybe someone else knows more.

According Gotheborg.com:
Handwritten Dai Nippon marks together with the artist’s signature date to the Meiji Period (1868-1911), reflecting the greatly increased nationalism of that period.

Regards,
Martin.

Thank you Martin for your reply, I have not yet found anything of a similar style or anything about this artist either. I am curious to know if you have see this style of decoration before and whether you think this piece could be considered satsuma.

regards,
Tom

Tom,

I have not seen something like this before, a very strange and intriguing piece.
The decoration is very busy for a Japanese piece and the images of the animals are very poor painted, it looks more like a copy of a Chinese piece. Perhaps made by an apprentice?
I would not call this Satsuma, as I wrote before it's probably Kyo-ware.
Regards,
Martin.
