Your famille rose trefoil bowl with "egret in lotus marsh" motif has a four character mark of "Guangxu nian Zhi", or "Made during the Guangxu Reign", and I would opine it likely is of that period, 1875-1908.

Best regards,

Thanks Bill
Is the low color quality, especially at the base, typical of this period?
Best Regards
Giuseppe

Such cases of kiln grit on the base of late 19th century Chinese dishes were a common occurrence, even with what otherwise were high quality export pieces. Some of this problem had to do with production stresses in the generation-long recovery of Jingdezhen from destruction of kilns and assassinations of potters during its five-year occupation by Taiping rebels during the Xianfeng reign. Also, since nature is full of small flaws of no consequence to daily life, I suspect that 19th century Chinese were especially well equipped culturally to deal with such issues, which were inconsequential to the intended use of the item and, in any event, only concerned something intended for use by "foreign devils" as opposed, to say, their emperor.

Thanks Bill.
Very interesting to hear you tell what happened in everyday life, around the production of Chinese ceramics.

I must confess, some of those perceptions were formed in everyday life around a Chinese spouse and traditional in-laws.
