Subject:Celadon bowl with mark - Daoguang?
Posted By: Pete Sun, Jan 28, 2018 IP: 2a02:c7d:4d74:2a00:a

I have this bowl, bluish celadon on the outside, speckled greyish, slightly bluish interior, unglazed rim and foot-rim. Can anyone decipher the 6 character mark. Would it be Daoguang period? Rim is 13.7cm. Many thanks in advance

I honestly do not see any writing there at all... and definitely not the characters for "dao guang"!

It would be a stretch, but you could almost convince yourself that there are either one or two Chinese characters OR Japanese Hiragana... but that steal leaves a lot of gibberish in there. Also definitely not Korean writing... so... perhaps another language?!

No, I know the mark isn't Daoguang, I was thinking the bowl might be identifiable as a type from Daoguang. It looks like a 3 character mark. Has to be Chinese being typical.

The mark has no meaning it is just a symbol associated with a particular maker to distinguish. The earliest date could stretch to Ming era, but need to confirm for authenticity.

A large quantity of these bowls were found among the cargo of the Desaru shipwreck which is believed to have sunk C. 1840 so they are very likely Daoguang period.
