Your ceramic grouping is stylistically Japanese. Without other clues, such as a signature or markings, that's about all I can tell you concerning it, except that art depicting men being entertained by Geishas, beginning with woodblock prints, is historically iconic to Japanese. I don't collect woodblocks of that type, but I do have some related carvings to share. I'm unsure of whether my pair of geishas attending to old fellows is carved of walrus tusk, tagua nut, bone or a mix of all. The carvings are about six inches high and are signed 玉心, which may transliterate as Gyokushin in Japanese if I'm right, which I'm usually not when dealing with kanji pronunciation.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Bill,

I see Schreger Lines on the base of your okimono, which means it ivory.

Cheers,
Stan

Stan, thanks for your evaluation. One day I've got to take some better pictures of areas on the topside for an opinion on whether the carving itself might be bone or tagua nut. The base doesn't appear to be contiguous but possibly a separate slice of ivory.

Much obliged,

Bill H.
