Subject:Chinese or Japanese Embroidery
Posted By: Sara Sullivan Wed, Jan 24, 2018 IP: 173.69.154.25

A embroidery panel of asian birds, either Japanese or Chinese, size 29x49.5. There is no signature or any information on the frame. It looks like it was hand stitched, you can see a bit of the original drawing behind the stiching. Any information someone could give me about it, like the age, Japanese or Chinese, if its machine made?

Hi. This is a very nice hand-made silk-on-silk embroidery worked mainly in satin, long and short stitches. Based on the peach silk ground and embroidery style I would think Chinese rather than Japanese. It was probably made in the first half of the 20th century owing to the colors, which appear to be from light-fast synthetic dyes rather than natural dyes from plant and insect sources such as were used before the end of the 19th century. The design is often referred to as 'bird and flower' or 'hundred bird' embroidery. This was originally an imperial workshop style, which began in the very late 18th to early 19th century, peaking artistically around 1850-80. Many of these embroideries seem to have been made in Canton (Guangzhou in Guangdong Province) for export to the West.

Correction to my earlier post - age is probably second half rather than first half of the 20th c; still a nice one.
