Subject:Bronze Mirror, Song Dynasty?
Posted By: Jac Mon, Sep 29, 2014 IP: 218.212.120.165

Diameter - 20cm. Purchased from last Sunday flea market in Singapore, for S$120.

Seller claimed this bronze mirror was made during the Song dynasty.

Is this a genuine Song dynasty bronze mirror? Can anyone help?

I do not have the knowledge or experience to determine if this object is an imitation or the real thing. I bought it because it looked nice and I am prepared to lose S$120, if this object is a modern fake with no collector value.

Thanks in advance, to those who are willing to help.

Jac.

Subject:Resting Bronze Buddha For Identification
Posted By: Jac Wed, Oct 15, 2014

Dear Dr. Wang,

Thanks for your feedback.

The first bronze mirror is a worthless modern FAKE.

I will assume that the second one is also modern since I purchased it without prior knowledge.

Will heed your suggestion and not buy another bronze object until I have learned how to identify the genuine ones.

I have 3 bronze Buddhist statues purchased more than 5 years ago which I wish I know what they are.

The first statue, of a contemplating/resting young Buddha is shown here. Height 32 cm, width 25 cm.

Could you advise if this statue is another modern imitation? Any information regarding its age and worth would be most helpful.

Thanks again.

Hi Jac,

I missed that one, sorry to be late.
Yep, I confirm all those are fakes, including the Buddha.
Check my answer dated "Oct 7, 14" about a "Lopburi style Buddha"
From that post, you will learn a lot about bronze corrosion.
Cheers.

Subject:Thanks & Help Identify Two More Bronze Surfaces
Posted By: Jac Fri, Oct 17, 2014

Hi Pierredw,

Thanks for your help. I am grateful that you are willing to tell me the three bronze objects of mine are fakes.

I have checked your answer on the "Lopburi style Buddha". Based on that answer, I am able to identify a fake bronze vessel on my own. The picture of the lid of the fake vessel is shown below.

Since I am just beginning to learn how to identify antique bronze object, I am not sure if the surface corrosion of the object in the middle and bottom photo below is modern imitation or could be old.

Could you help me, again?

Hi Pierre,

I have just found out on my own that the third bottom picture is a fake bronze object.

I only need help on the middle bronze surface.

Hi Jac,

Could you post a pic or two of the questionable object?

I do not think the middle one is genuine neither.
For sure the last one is a fantasy.

Thanks.

Hi Pierre,

I have thrown away the top and bottom objects as they are ugly fakes.

The pictures of middle bronze vessel which measures 30 cm high and 20 cm wide are shown below.

Thanks.

Hi Pierre,

Another 3 pictures of the questionable bronze object.

Top first photo - underside of the tripod vessel.

Bottom photo - inner wall of the vessel.

Any comment would be helpful.

Thanks.

Hi Jac,
Thanks for the photos.

Looking at the style it looks like a Zhou, maybe Shang, dynasty water vessel.

In this particular case, and to give it a chance, you will have to scratch a green little part and see what is the color underneath.

From the photos I can't tell the real colors nor the touch feeling.

I have some doubts about:

- holes here and there, are they brown or are they ox blood color?
- the design which seems to be "too much",
- the lack of uniformity of the erosion and corrosion,
- irregularity of the colors,
- presence of little holes made by the explosion of bubbles created by the acid.

It is worth giving it a try I think.

Cheers.

Subject:No Ox Blood Color Under Green Surface
Posted By: Jac Sun, Oct 26, 2014

Hi Pierre,

I have scrubbed the entire surface of the vessel with a steel brush and water for about 30 minutes and found no ox blood color material underneath the green areas of the vessel - see attached photos.

What I can see are brown and dark brown patches below the layer of green parts that have been peeled off by the steel brush.

I shall treat this vessel as a decorative piece.

Thanks for your help.

Purchased 3 bronze objects from a shop in Singapore recently.

Seller said this wine vessel was from the Warring States period.
