Subject:wooden wise man carving
Posted By: david Wed, Dec 20, 2017 IP: 2607:fea8:1d5f:f819:

Hello, First of all I realize it is difficult to date wooden carvings; especially those unsigned; that being said; would anyone hazard a guess as to the age of this 9 1/2" h shellacked or varnished wise man carving; the finish is quite worn! Any assistance would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! David.

Hi David, I can’t give you an exact date but my router leaves marks sometimes that look like the circles on the base of your carving. I could be wrong, I have a wood carving that I am curious about as well, but it’s African American art I believe from a man on the Chalk Hill plantation- so I didn’t post it. It looks different than yours and bottom is beginning to get rock hard and almost petrified. Either way, you have an interresting piece there.

Your welcome David, I’ll let you know if I happen to find anything out. It is a tough question. To me, it does look to be from sometime in the modern machine age. Possibly machine milled and then hand carved. It slipped my mind before, but I have seen similar circular marks as well, on very old items drilled with bamboo and abrasives like flint. I have no idea why someone would use a router or a bamboo drill on the base though. If they were more on the center, It would make sense to be marks from a lathe. The holes in the wood from the tacks look very small, and not like hand cut tacks. I will do more researching
