Subject:Chinese Vase Marked— Help? Thank you
Posted By: James Sat, Dec 30, 2017 IP: 69.122.143.214

I just need your opinion on this large Chinese Vase. It is marked,.. but I am not really sure, if it is old or modern. Thank you

The Chilong (immature dragon) and Ruyi scepter head motif on the vase is uncannily even, a perfect mirror image in the parts of the dragon scroll that's visible. Likewise, the six-character Qianlong mark is picture perfect; but despite all the apparent perfection, the maker seems to have been unable to employ anyone at the kiln who could do the comparatively simple job of applying an even coat of glaze on the inner foot. These points, plus the artificially dirtied foot rim, are certain signs of this vase having transfer-decoration, a technology that wasn't used commercially in China until the early 20th century, which would be a best case scenario for age in this case. However, in my opinion, this piece probably is a late 20th or 21st century product.

Best regards,

Bill H.
