This porcelain container has been in our family for a Century. My Mom used to play with it as a little girl and she thinks it was used for Tea. The lid is marked in red J.I.
Approx 3.5 x 2.5 x 5 inches

Any info regarding Where, When this was made and for What it was used for, is muchly appreciated.

While possibly also suitable for tea, ceramic containers of the same form were being made and decorated in Japan a century or more ago and exported as cologne jars. See link for one by the Zoshuntei Sampo studio.

Yours looks quite a bit like a European made item with Chinoiserie-type figural motif. "Old Paris" wares come to mind, and though I don't recognize the markings, you may be able to find them online. Having said that, Japanese porcelain painters were, of course, quite adept at producing fine copies of western ceramics in a variety of styles.

Best regards,

Bill H.

I think this may be European, or maybe European decorated. I think the chrome colors and the way of the floral design would put it after 1820s. You ca see similar flowers if you search 19th century pearl ware . Nice Tea caddy, hopefully someone will be able to assist more with the mark and a closer date

This is probably not Chinese. Probably European, maybe French or German.

Thank You Bill H., Endre and Bokaba,

This is indeed likely European (French)... like Bill H. said Chinoiserie-type figural motif "Old Paris" wares.
I've found several other examples online with your help, but no info yet on the artist/manufacturer.

According to some Japanese web sources the "Zoshuntei
Sanpo" trade name was given by an Arita merchant named
Hisatomi Yojibee who acquired the the right from Saga clan in 1841 to export Japanese ceramics to the Netherlands. The name of his export company was "Zoshuntei"
With regards,
I.Nagy
