Whether you celebrate this time of year or not, hope the end of the old year and start of the new sets a pleasant pace of peace and positivity for you and yours.

Cheers,

In the West it's Santa Claus, a man
known for his generosity. In Asia this
characteristic is also respected. I
offer here a representation of a Chinese
version of a bearded man bring gifts
attributed to Huang Shen.

Nice scroll for any season. Actually, the Cloth Sack Monk, or Budai Heshang (Hotei in Japan), also has quite a reputation as Santa Claus figure, including legends about how his cloth sack never runs out of boons for the deserving, young and old alike. Fat & jolly appearance too, but nary a hair on his chin. On the other hand, he also is known for kicking booty on occasion in his manifestation in Tibetan Tantric beliefs as Hva Shang (variation on 'Heshang'), the Buddhist divinity who serves alongside the Tiger-taming Dharmatala and the Four Lokapala Guardian Kings in defending the faith and particularly in protecting the original 16 Arhats or Sages, called Luohan in Chinese. Of course, Santa spends a lot of time trying to find out who's naughty or nice too.

Here's a PhotoShopped picture of a small late Ming-to-Transitional Hva Shang image sitting before a Thangka showing him on a light day with other guardians.

Cheers,

Bill H
