Subject:Help with Ko-sometsuke Plates markings
Posted By: Linda2 Wed, Nov 29, 2017 IP: 142.59.135.91

I have some plates that I believe are from the 17th century Tiangi/Chongzhen and most likely made for Japanese market (ko-sometsuke). About 5.5" across. Can anyone translate the marks? Any other comments would be appreciated.

Dear Linda

I hate to be the bearer of bad news; but the second mark appears to be a very oddly inscribed four-character Kangxi mark.

Four-character Kangxi marks are almost unknown prior to the Kangxi Revival porcelains of the late 19th / early 20th centuries. When this is combined with the typical fat-faced figures of the era on the design of the plates, I think there is little doubt that these are Kangxi Revival porcelains and not 17th century Kosometsuke.

Kind regards
J.Lim

Those are late-Qing-Republic era dishes in the motif of the three Daoist Star Gods. Here's one of a pair I have in the same size as yours with the mark of Xuantong (1909-11), the last Qing Emperor. In keeping with the period trend, such dishes came with a variety of marks, or no mark at all, to suit various consumer tastes.

Best regards,

Bill H.

FYI, here are images of the other Xuantong dish I mentioned.
