Subject:Giant Foo Dog Bowl - is this Kangxi Revival?
Posted By: JLim Sun, Nov 12, 2017 IP: 101.164.192.17

Dear all

A recent acquisition of mine has been this very large (33cm diameter) bowl featuring a foo dog. The whole design is heavily reminiscent of Kangxi era blue and white, including the following features:
- the design of the foo dog, with its anxious expression, curls of mane-hair, and especially its white paw-tips, which can be seen on several Transitional porcelains
- the peonies surrounding the foo dog, including the use of washes of colour in the petals themselves
- the soya sauce rim to prevent fritting.

However, I have come to the conclusion that this object is more likely to be Kangxi Revival (late 19th century) rather than Kangxi for the following reasons:
-although the design resembles Transitional era porcelains, there is something relatively stodgy in the design - for example, the way the peonies are filled in with a relatively dull wash that neatly goes to the lines - a Kangxi paintjob I would expect to have been more dynamic and sketchy
-the foot-rim, although presenting relatively white well-levigated porcelain, is very rounded and solid. I am not at all sure, however, that really large soup bowls from the Kangxi era would not have had a similar stout footrim, just from a practicality standpoint?

I hope someone will be able to comment on the probable dating of this object, especially its solid footrim. Further pictures will follow shortly.

Kind regards
J.Lim

Further pictures. The third image is of a foo dog of the style on a Wanli jar in a Dutch museum.
