Subject:Translation of Ancient Chinese Calligraphy/Characters
Posted By: Miano Fri, Oct 27, 2017 IP: 119.95.194.62

Hello Friends,

I do hope you are fine. I have this painting in my private collection and would like to identify the artist and/or period.

It is scroll mounted, ink and color on silk. So far, I have been unable to identify the artist and/or period since the characters are in caoshu (cursive script). Would you be in a position to translate the characters and advise any artist who this work maybe attributed to?

I would also like to identify the exact date within the 60 year cycle if this is mentioned in the characters.

Kind regards,

Miano

Dear Miano,
This is my tentative reading of the inscription,
羊雲之老人 寫 Painted by the Old Man of the Mackerel-sky
(Yangyun zhi laoren xie)
(This is the art-name of the painter)
於 蒼岱 畫屋 At Cangdai Painting House
(Cangdai is a name of a village in Zhejiang Province)

The picture is too much blurred to figure out the seals. There is not dating.

With regards,
I.Nagy

Hello I.Nagy,

Thank you for the response. I understand the name is Yangyun from the Cangdai Painting House in the Zhejiang Province. I believe Yangyun is the pseudonym. Do you know which artists went by this pseudonym?

I have attached photos of the seal and the calligraphy once again. I hope this helps.

Regards,

Miano
