Subject:VERY large 120 cm Vase, Help with translation.
Posted By: casper Fri, Oct 20, 2017 IP: 95.149.183.22

Hi everyone! its been a while since I was posting here last time.

Today I'm looking to obtain more information about this vase please.

Its very large, around 120cm high, have 6 character marks on the bottom. Bottom rim appears to have some rust and dirt all over.
Unusual rabbit handles, on both sides. Also one character in the neck.

Thanks for all help, and to anyone interested in sharing knowledge.

Casp

Hi casper

A pretty nice example of Japanese Kutani ware. I have no idea of how old it is; I have a feeling the type of gilt on the rabbit ears might be a clue.

Kind regards
JLim

Casper,
The mark is reading from right to left: Hizen 肥前 Arita 有田 Yamaguchi 山口 Zo 造 = Made by Yamaguchi in (the town of) Arita (in the former) Hizen province, see picture below.

This is an Arita Imari vase - not Kutani - made in the style of Hichozan, Fukagawa and Zoshuntei from about the same period (Meiji).

The vase is made about 1880-1900, probably by Yamaguchi Kogetsu (1844-1904), who was one of the most famous Japanese woodblock-prints painters. Occasionally he seemed to paint ceramics as well on demand (vases and plates), there are a few more marks with his name found on ceramics.

The characters on the neck read:
Migi 右 Go 五 (five 5), so it was the right vase of a pair. No idea what the 5 means in this case.

Regards,
Martin.
