Subject:Translation of poaaible Wang Dafan work
Posted By: Ian Dubin Thu, Oct 19, 2017 IP: 42.2.219.172

Sirs

I wonder of anyone on this excellent forum can assist me with a translation of the title of this work which I believe to have been painted by Wang Dafan (18881 - 1961) one of the 8 Friends of Zhushan.

Thanks in advance

Ian Dubin

The 4 big characters look like to be "逍遙八遷". But shouldn't it be "逍遙八仙"? which literally means "eight immortals enjoying their magic lives", and apparently describes exactly what are on the pictures. The "逍遙八遷" doesn't really make any good sense, and appears to me more like a "typo".

Any better ideas?

Hi there Language Expert

Thanks for the insights

Here's a link to a much higher definition version of the picture. I think you will see it doesn't have much to do with the 8 immortals, although it shows a pretty well immortal sort of scene.

I am uncertain what the vegetable is that the fat guy on the right is holding although it certainly seems to be blooming as he contemplates the young girl at the center of attention.

Bill H has been providing me tutelage and I now have pretty much accepted (sadly) that this is probably not the work of Wang Dafan (1888-1961) although that is what the seals purport to say,

Nonetheless, my provenance is pretty good that this cannot be earlier than the early 90s. It is definitely hand painted and in my view a pretty interesting piece. Even if it wasn't Wang Dafan, whoever painted this has a lot of talent and imagination.

I'm trying to sell some of the others I hold - this one I intend to keep to remind me of my youth in my old age (ie now).

Thanks for the help

Ian
