Subject:Painted Plaques of Immortals from Well-Known American Estate
Posted By: Bill H Sun, Oct 15, 2017 IP: 2601:342:80:4e1c:54f

I'd posted a query about these two wood-framed plaques a few years ago and resubmit them now in hopes of gleaning a few more details about the inscriptions from new translation talent the forum has had the fortune to attract recently. I'm particularly interested in identifying the artist who painted them. The style is somewhat in the manner of the master Wang Qi, so perhaps they're by an apprentice of his. I believe they may be early Republic.

The seller who sold them to me attributed the plaques to the estate of American aluminum manufacturing magnate Arthur Vining Davis (1867-1962), who lived mostly in south Florida after retirement in 1957, with enough wealth to rank an estimated third-place on the list of richest people in the world. He left behind several charitable foundations, including one which has supported the American Public Broadcasting Service. The plaques probably were on the market in the early 1960s, and I bought them when they came up again in Florida circa 2010.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Hi Bill,

Nice panels. I agree they are Republic period. I can't really help on the translation, hopefully they are dated. I will ask around. From what I have seen, the type of shading and expression in the faces appeared in the 1930s and was used up until 1949. Most of the 1912-1920s pieces I have seen have the old Qing-style gaunt, expressionless faces.
