Subject:Jade or stone disk necklace
Posted By: Brett Thu, Oct 12, 2017 IP: 69.113.7.85

I had this for a while and never really thought much of it. It is definitely some kind of hard stone. I took a steel pin and tried scratching with some force and I couldn't seem to mark it. When I applied very hard force it made what seemed like a very faint scratch, but it could have also just been residual metal from the pin flaking off. Could this be jade? Or a stone harder than jade? There is evidence of tool marks, but what kind of tool could carve this? The color of this ranges from a dark green, to dark brown, to light brown. Very nice relief on some of the figures. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

That item looks like color has been added to make it look old.
scratch on a solid light colored area, and look closely, the scratch is white or black. Then tell us the result

Hello,

Thanks for the input. I took a sharper pin and scratched it. First off it is definitely a very hard stone because a lot of pressure only produces very light surface scratches. Surprisingly it left behind dark gray / black marks which then we easily wiped away. It almost looked like it was drawn with a pencil. Does this mean its not jade?

Everything looks OK, the black mark is from the pin, the stone is harder, and therefore in this case it is Jade, .

Sorry I meant to add that there actually are no scratches that I can see, just the gray line that wipes away.

Thanks for the help. You said that it looked like color was added to make it look old. Does this still apply, or can it actually be old. Is this considered a bi disk? Also is there a name for this type of coloring on jade? One last thing what would the animals be? Is that a feline animal with a dragon on top? I really appreciate all the help.
