Subject:Signature on Imari plate
Posted By: Martin Michels Tue, Oct 10, 2017 IP: 84.26.216.123

I'm interested in this Imari plate which is on Ebay, but before bidding I like to know what the signature is under this plate, see the 2nd picture.
For this I need the more experienced translators of the forum.
And If possible: any idea about the age?
Thanks in advance,
Martin.

Martin, the characters are 太豐堂, and read down literally as the "Great Abundance Hall", or "Hall of Great Abundance" as usually read in context. Here's a link to a site with another plate with the mark in a different configuration. I'm unsure if it is Chinese or Japanese, but you may be able to make a determination with a Google character search and browser or online machine translation.

Best regards,

Bill H.

The mark reads 'Taihodo' in Japanese.

Guy,

Thanks for your contribution. All parts help.

I looked at the Rubylane item and indeed they translate the mark (see picture) as 勢州窯 太豊堂 作 = Seishu Gama Taihodo Saku.

However on the site of "Modern Japanese Pottery and Porcelain marks" I found the same plate and mark, but they translate the mark as: 勢州窯 太楽老 作 = Seishu Gama Tairakuro (?) Saku.
See this link:
http://modernjapanesepotterymarks.blogspot.nl/2012/03/bankoyaki.html

But how reliable is Rubylane? I found another of their items and they believe the mark is Seishu Gama, but the mark is totally different from the one here. Plus the text is LOL, quote: " I believe it is the mark for Seishu-gama or the Seishu family kiln in Taihodo-saku, but will need to confirm".
How do they came up with that: "Seishu family kiln in Taihodo-saku".
See this link:

Anyway, this is what this forum is meant for, discussing and helping each other.

Thanks a lot and curious for your reply. No disrespect.
Regards,
Martin.

Hi Martin,

IMO, the reading of the cursive characters by Ruby Lane is correct. It reads 太豊堂 (Taihôdô) and not 太楽老. There can be no doubt about the first two characters; the cursive reading of the last character 堂 ('dô' in this context translated as 'company') in particular can be deceiving but it is for sure not 老.
Taihôdô is the company name of a manufacturer or a wholesaler.

Best regards,
Guy.

Bill H.

Thanks again for your help, I agree with the characters you've specified. It looks like the mark is more Chinese than Japanese: Tai Feng Tang (Great Abundance Hall), although this item looks more Japanese and has a "JAPAN" sticker.
So perhaps one or more of the other AAF regulars have an opinion about this, to would be greatly appreciated.
Regards,
Martin.

P.S. Bill, you forgot the link :-)

Guy and Bill H.

Thanks a lot for helping me with this. Japanese seals and cursive writing is hard for me to decipher. I'm already pleased if I can decipher Kanji signatures myself.
So Taihodo it is, thanks again.
Martin.
