I'm sure most have seen these boxes before. It does not say China, so I guess it's pretty old. I see them vaguely described most of the time- lacquerware nesting boxes 1920s. I am hoping that someone could enlighten me about Foochow Lacquerware in Hong Kong and in particular family owned shops. I've tried to decipher the Chinese writing on the mark and I think it says: wares lacquer Kwai Chung business import export. Please correct me, as I'm sure I don't have it completely correct. I did find a reference in a book from 1912, " the directory and chronicle for China, Japan, Corea, Indo-China, etc.....Hong Kong directory
Pg 1077
A. Ling & co. Furniture, foochow lacquered ware, and photo goods dealer 19 Queens road central tsang A. Ling Chang Lu Woon
Pg 1116
Long Hing & co, photographic goods dealers. 17 queens road central Kom Cheong, signs per pro. Leung Wan Hok, do.
I do not know how names work in Chinese families or if different spellings were used by those writing the directories (kind of like old US Census data spelled phonetically)
Were there a large number of Foochow exporters in Hong Kong, or did these come about from this Queens road retailer.
I may be completely off track, and may be talking about something many find irrelevant. I do however hope to hear from any of you who have an opinion or any other resolve about this box. Thank you
