Subject:Questions about Japanese Calligraphy Vase
Posted By: Jim H Mon, Sep 04, 2017 IP: 2601:142:8200:350:e9

I know the calligraphy is a poem. I hope someone can translate it --even if it is just the general idea of it?

Can anyone more knowledgeable than me identify whether this is Hagi- Mino- or another yaki? Octagonal at base, round at shoulder. With calligraphy in brown underglaze, over a thick, unctuous glaze of greenish blue with some tannish tones. At bottom front, thin glaze exposes a reddish-brown coarse clay. I assume it is Showa.

There is an impressed mark, but I don't think it is legible. I've fiddled with the contrast and sharpness in attempt to make it as clear as possible. It would be great if the potter could be identified.

Any insights would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Here is my tentative translation,
平和を祈るもろびとや
道ひとすじに生き栄えらむ
Heiwa wo inoru morobito ya
michi hitosuji ni ikisakaeramu

People who pray for peace and
those who are selected to live a dedicated life

(栄えらむ = 栄撰らむ Fourth step Ma line flexion of historical kana orthography verbs)

With regards,
