Subject:Age and Signature Japanese bowl
Posted By: Martin Michels Fri, Sep 01, 2017 IP: 84.26.216.123

I'm interested in this bowl seen on an auction side, but I'm hesitating. It's described as Kutani-style, Meiji Period before 1900.
I was not able to decipher the signature.
So, can anyone tell me something about this bowl? Age? Signature? Made where?
Thanks in advance for any help,
Martin.

The bottom marks reads,
襲木米造 Roki Mokubei Zo Made by Roki Mokubei
According to literature Roki Mokubei is the art name of painter Aoki Mokubei (1767-1833) 青木
木米 who was invited to Kaga for the revitalization of Kutani-yaki. The 聾 (Ro Deaf)
character in his art name was selected because
of his ailing hearing.
I am not expert on pottery, so I can't say
anyhing about its origanility.
With regards,

Hi Martin,

I was unable to find out much regarding this artist. I looked through all of my Japanese porcelain books and did not find anything. Information on Kutani wares is very limited (compared to Arita and Satsuma). I was able to find two pieces with similar decoration in the Schiffer book date early to mid 19th Century. The paste looks extremely rough on the piece you posted.
