Subject:Translation help request
Posted By: Ron Sat, Jul 01, 2017 IP: 50.32.128.112

Hello all. Would anyone be willing to translate this (Japanese?) artist's name? Thank you!

The signature reads,
大雲 Taiun (Japanese)
Dai Yun (Chinese)
Seal reads,
竜 Ryu or Tatsu (Japanese)
       Long (Chinese)
In contemporary Chinese language this abbreviated form of 竜( 龍)is not used, therefore it suggests the possibility of Japanes artist. However, I could not find any artist with this name and Ryu surname or art
name。i think Komura Taiun 小村大雲(1883-1931、)a known painter of Meiji and ealy Showa era cannot come into question.
Sorry not to be more help.
With regards,

Thank you very much I. Nagy! I had a hunch these were Japanese pieces. As a matter of fact, I have a few more works by the same artist and on the back of a few a sticker says "Tai Un".
Unfortunately I've had no luck thus far finding the artist. But now, thanks to your help, I can research 竜 - Ryu or Tatsu, as designated in the seal.
I agree with you that Komura Taiun is probably not this artist. Thanks again!
Ron

Evening Ron,
I think I have some artwork by the same artist. The signature and birds look the same if not very similar to some on your photos.I was lead to this thread by a user of Reddit when I asked for a translation on my painting.
Did you get anywhere with your research?

Hello Chloe -
Thank you for your interest, but unfortunately I never figured out who this artist is. No luck with the seal either. ("Dragon" ?) And why some stickers on the back of some of these paintings said "Tai Un" ? Very curious. If you do find anything out, I'd be very interested.
Best of luck!
