Subject:vase japanese or chinese?
Posted By: yurike Mon, Aug 07, 2017 IP: 96.244.195.188

Good evening forum

Recently bought this 4" vase, but unsure if the mark/signature is Japanese or Chinese in origin.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your help.

Based on information found at the link, this vase with a seal-script mark of "Bunsai" and blue & white Chinese-style decoration may be the work of a circa late Meiji period Japanese potter named Ogawa Bunsai (小川文斉), or one of his heirs, whose kiln was near Kiyomitsu in Kyoto. The 5th generation of the family closed it in 1973. Ogawa Bunsai also is mentioned as using this mark in the 1902 book, "Japan: Its History, Arts, and Literature", by Frank Brinkley.

Best regards,

Bill H.

Your vase is Japanese.
The bottom mark 文斎 Bunsai indicates the name of kiln in Kyoto Japan.
The founder Ogawa Bunsai opened his kiln in Kyoto
in 1847.Currently the 5th generation owner runs the business.
With regards,

Thank you both for those very fast replies.
I think this may be closer to a Meiji era piece.
Again thank you very much for your help.
