Yes, this is a Shandong School inside painted bottle c. late 19th/early 20th Century. It is signed "Xin Yong Tian," a little-known Shandong artist. I have attached pictures of my bottle as well as a link to the snuff bottle collector site.

Hello,
Very grateful for the information, many thanks. I see the signatures of the 2, mine and the one in the link, match with similar painting styles, although the depth and patina are different in any further attempts to compare them.

Best regards

Kevin

I'll give this a shot, though I'm never entirely certain when it comes to this snuff bottle mini-script. My first guess is that the characters are '东永乆作' (Dong Yong jiu zuo). 'Dong' is a surname, so this might be read as 'Made by Dong Yongjiu'. 'Dong' also is an abbreviation for Shandong Province, but a translation of 'Made Perpetually at Shandong' sounds to me like a stretch. The characters '永乆' (yong jiu) means 'perpetual' but '乆', which looks more like what's on your bottle, is an archaic version of the modern form, '久', also pronounced 'jiu', which is more often teamed with 'yong' for the same term nowadays. I didn't find any clear links to snuff bottles when I did a Google character search, so something could still be amiss in my reading.

Best regards,

Bill H

Well, no trifecta on the artist's name today, but glad Bokaba & I. Nagy were on hand to pick up the slack. :)

I rather would read the name of the painter:
辛永夭 Xin Yongyao
The reading of the full text:
時在戊辰年 In the year of Eart Dragon
(...1808,1868 etc.)
仲月下請 Taken on in the second month of
spring
倣石谷生本 An imitation of Shigu s original

(Shigu 石谷 is the art name of the famous early
Qing period painter, Wang Hui 王翬 (1632-1717))
With regards,

Thank you for the post! I went on-line and found several examples of Shigu's earlier landscape work, with bluish rock and mountain formations central to the paintings, giving a clear connection then as you have indicated to the influence of his work in the painting style here.
a link below to one image of a Shingu found on the askart.com site

Kevin, few people will understand who you mean by using "Shigu" as the name of the painter your bottle is emulating, you'll have a lot better luck with Wang Hui, or even Wang Shigu, eg:

https://www.google.com/search?q=Wang+Hui&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwjW7YDjqMXVAhVs4YMKHVynB0AQ_AUICygC&biw=1920&bih=950.

Thank you for the clarification. Wonderful link to the artist's work w/ the many examples provided by it. The website: China online museum gives a brief bio on him with more of his paintings on view there

Best regards
