Subject:Satsuma vase?
Posted By: Wayne Thu, Aug 03, 2017 IP: 50.0.151.86

A little research makes me think these are "Satsuma" & not cloisonné. I mistook the incredibly fine gold lines as thin wire - I did not think they could have been painted on by hand until I learned that they sometimes use individual rat hairs as a "brush". Images in my previous post (couldn't edit?), make them appear 1/2 as tall (12") as they are. They are done really well: I have to think the artist (please see signature) must be known. Am I correct about "Satsuma" & can you decipher the calligraphy? Thank you Asian Art Forum!

Yes, Satsuma vases. Probably late 19th/early 20th Century. The marks, if any, were probably destroyed when they were turned into lamps.

Thanks for the info. The artist signed both on the panels w/the cranes. You can find the characters at the base of 1st image the image near the blue & gold border. Too bad they were turned into lamps - it really does detract from their beauty and whatever monetary value they might have had.

(I've researched other Satsuma artist signatures the past 2 days. Might it be Gyokuzan?

Thanks again!

Yes, Gyokuzan, but I don't know what the third Kanji character is.

The 3rd character is Ga 画, so Gyokuzan Ga 玉山画 meaning "painted by Gyokuzan".

Thank you for the additional info. I had seen that 3rd character associated with another signature, and was curious about its meaning. I wonder if Gyokuzan was particularly pleased with his work on these two vases. He departed from his standard technique, signing the artwork instead of the bottom, & added the "painted by" character. Food for thought anyway. Thank you again "Asian Arts". You have a great Forum!

Great! Thanks for verifying "Gyokuzan". I was able to remove the lamp fixtures, and you were correct: there is no trace of any marks. But they DO look much better as vases than as lamps.
