Posted By: Bokaba Fri, Aug 04, 2017 Yes, this is a Shandong School inside painted bottle c. late 19th/early 20th Century. It is signed "Xin Yong Tian," a little-known Shandong artist. I have attached pictures of my bottle as well as a link to the snuff bottle collector site. |

Subject:Re: Help To Identify Artist- Inside Painted Paneled Glass Snuff Bottle,
Posted By: Bill H Sat, Aug 05, 2017 I'll give this a shot, though I'm never entirely certain when it comes to this snuff bottle mini-script. My first guess is that the characters are '东永乆作' (Dong Yong jiu zuo). 'Dong' is a surname, so this might be read as 'Made by Dong Yongjiu'. 'Dong' also is an abbreviation for Shandong Province, but a translation of 'Made Perpetually at Shandong' sounds to me like a stretch. The characters '永乆' (yong jiu) means 'perpetual' but '乆', which looks more like what's on your bottle, is an archaic version of the modern form, '久', also pronounced 'jiu', which is more often teamed with 'yong' for the same term nowadays. I didn't find any clear links to snuff bottles when I did a Google character search, so something could still be amiss in my reading. |

Posted By: Kevin Donnelley Sun, Aug 06, 2017 Thank you for the post! I went on-line and found several examples of Shigu's earlier landscape work, with bluish rock and mountain formations central to the paintings, giving a clear connection then as you have indicated to the influence of his work in the painting style here. |
