Subject:17th C. Chinese painting?
Posted By: Noodle Thu, Jul 27, 2017 IP: 24.218.243.164

Hi! I am trying to learn more about a family painting my Chinese mother owns. It seems to be from the 17th C., but I am no expert. I have attached a picture of the piece--which is fairly large and on a silk tapestry--and a closer image of the signature and seals (?). Can anyone here provide more information on the provinence and what is depicted? This painting is part my family's heritage and has been handed down for generations. Yet I have no real understanding of its significance.

Thanks so much for your time!

Inscription reads:
舜江 River Shun (Art name of the painter)
呂煥成 Lü Huancheng )Name of the painter)
The said painter 1630-1710? is a well known artist of the Qing period. You can find quite a lot of his works on the net.
River Shun (舜江)is the name of a river in Zhejiang province. Yunyo (餘姚)the birthplace
of the artist lies on the banks of this river.
The reason of use the name of the river as art name comes from here.
Seals: 煥 Huan、成 Sheng
With regards,

Some of Lu's paintings in Chinese museums can be seen here (the paintings that come before the heading that reads 拍品, or "auction items"): http://jsl641124.blog.163.com/blog/static/177025143201401825054765/ Larger images can be seen here: http://www.360doc.com/content/14/0331/19/11654230_365270377.shtml

As I think you will notice, the style of your picture's hills and mountains looks quite different from the examples above, simpler and less subtle. It may be an anonymous work to which Lu's name was added because the subject matter is similar to some of Lu's works. Hard to tell without better pictures of reliable paintings by him, and closeups of your painting. Is there a titleslip on the outside of the mounting?
