Subject:Plate and Bowl ID Help Please
Posted By: Lance Frazer Sun, Jul 09, 2017 IP: 2601:0204:4001:3df5:

Two recent purchases, one of which I am guessing is a western production of an Asian form. The plate is 8 inches across, with no mark on the bottom. The bowl is slightly larger, about 9 1/2 inches, and has a small mark on the bottom. Both have unglazed rings at the base, and are very heavy for their size (the bowl rings nicely when tapped). I'm thinking the bowl might be Imari, but I haven't the knowledge to be sure. I would appreciate any and all help on these, and will add closeups when the light is better.

Most seen Aoki mark, in fact it's the 1st character of the name Aoki 青木: Ao (green / blue).

Mark is form the Aoki Kyodai-Shokai (Aoki Brothers Company), which was founded in the 1890's by Aoki Jinichiro (1863-1955).
The Aoki mark dates from around 1890-1900 till the 1950's and is in blue or red or impressed.
The red mark can be found on pieces not originally intended for export, whereas the blue marks were used on "made for export" pieces.

No idea about the age.
Regards,
Martin.

Both pieces are Japanese. The mark on the Arita porcelain bowl identifies it as a product of the Aoki (青) family kiln, with a date of manufacture circa the mid-20th century, according to gotheborg.com and other websites. This date falls into the mid-Showa period (1926-1989).

The palette of the bowl falls within the type usually called "Imari". This terms comes from the port of Imari, where much Japanese porcelain historically was dispatched by ship for export.

The other dish in blue & white is a kind of transfer ware ("inban-de" in Japanese). It may date a bit earlier into the 20th century than the bowl, But I'll leave that to collectors of this type of ware (and imagine they will wish to see more than is presently shown of this dish).

Best regards,

Bill H.
