Subject:help identifying painting and signature stamp
Posted By: Liz Osborne Tue, Jul 04, 2017 IP: 216.58.103.142

I have a set of 5 paintings from my mother-in-law's estate and would love to know when they were from. Definitely painted on (probably) silk, not paper. Thank you in advance.

These are both signed as being by Lu Huancheng 吕焕成, a 17th century painter (died around 1703), but are much more recent than that and painted more as decorative renderings of traditional subjects than as "fine art". "Playing the Qin and Relaxing" is the title of the first one. It's inscribed as having been painted in Shanghai, which was a fishing village the 17th century when Lu was alive, not the city it has become since the middle of the 19th century. If we take the Shanghai location as suggesting that the cyclical date 己未 in the inscription is meant to be current with the execution of the picture rather than to match Lu's lifetime, it's dated to 1919.

If we assume the 1919 date is accurate, the cyclical year in the inscription of the second painting 丙寅 equates to 1926.

Here's a website with some paintings by Lu Huancheng to give you a sense his actual style: http://blog.sina.com.cn/s/blog_98fe1ac101017y7w.html

That is so helpful... thank you! It gives the paintings more meaning when I know the background of them.
