Subject:Japanese Bronze Sitting Tanaki

Hello
I would like to learn more about this small bronze of a tanaki, knowing the approximate age and purpose would be greatly appreciated.
There is a worn post on each of the bottom paws with rough patches to both paws and the seat area where the fur lines end. Some wear marks to the patina and bronze on the seat area and backside
HT: 2 5/8"; 6.7cm

The correct spelling for the Japanese raccoon dog
is tanuki
