Posted By: benbenny Sat, May 13, 2017 IP: 2a02:0c7d:04b6:5b00:

Have a pair of paintings which some aging and think they are traditional Chinese or Japanese? They probably were scroll paintings and sit now framed behind glass. Looks like they were framed in the 1950s. Need help with the text, seal and age if possible.

These pictures seem to be by the same artist but are inscribed and signed falsely, with the names of Qing court painter Zou Yigui and a female Qing painter named Chen Shu respectively. Could be Japanese pictures with forged signatures, as I am having trouble thinking of other Chinese examples where the birds are painted in this style but on silk of some apparent age

Thank so much Rat. This info helps me out a lot. I was also thinking towards Japanese art because of the brown background which looks more japanese style to me? The other painting has a other seal mark which I forgot to upload. Other questions that I have is about the paper used. I first thought it was painted on silk but the closer I look the more I think it's painted on paper? I never seen similair paper before. It looks like it's laid with a silk woven net? Any ideas when and where this paper method was used?

This is the seal of the other picture and some closeup of the material. It's a different signature?

That's paper? I have to stop looking at these postings on my phone, I thought it showed an uneven (implying with the darkness) woven silk. It's possible you are still seeing paper backing underneath the silk. Alternatively, this is a total snow job and is a recent Chinese fabrication that has dyed whatever this material is a dark brown before some commercial illustrator added the birds and someone with some calligraphy skills or a good printer forged or copied some calligraphy by Zou and Chen.

still more questions than answers I'm afraid
