Subject:Japanes Container / Vessel
Posted By: Christopher Wed, Apr 12, 2017 IP: 2600:1000:b122:c3d1:

Hello,

Could someone please tell me what this Japanese item is called, and what the wood is?

From the pics, how old do you think it is?

Thank you in advance.

Christopher

You have a wooden box used in Japan to hold one of the colours of 'stones' for the game of I-Go (Japanese) 圍碁 or WeiQi (China) 圍棋.

The black or white stones are placed on a board marked by 19 lines by 19 lines, and the stones are placed on the intersections of the lines, not in the squares they create.

The object of the game is to control territory. The playing area is roughly the equivalent of five chess boards.

Here is a set of stones in their boxes.

Not that I'm wishy-washy, but I like Mikeoz's explanation a lot better than mine. Should've realized a kogo never would have accumulated all those salty-looking stains from eons of handling by sweaty-palmed competitors and weepy losers. ;)

If you're certain it's Japanese, it may be an incense box (kogo). Perhaps others recognize the wood and age.

Best regards,

Bill H.

I took the last photo at night, and also now realise you can't see that the shape and detail of the boxes are the same. Here is a new photo taken in daylight.
