Subject:Why did this China Republic vase sell so high?

I saw this auction on ebay last week and I was amazed at the final selling price. To sell for that much I can only assume one of 2 things: a) that it was imperial or b) that it is a famous artist. Any ideas on what went on here. I am trying to learn more about Asian antiques and I am just interested to know more about this piece. Thanks

Because at least two bidders thought it was the work of a prominent ceramic artist. Or because shill bidders bid it up to get it entered into the 2017 edition of "Prices for Chinese Porcelain at Auction" so that $100,000 price tags can now be slapped on similar items that would otherwise have sold for $100.

There are lots of possibilities, and skepticism can save you a lot of money in this field. Do not buy anything until you have read and observed a lot, and ideally handled genuine examples the type of objects you are interested in collecting. Never assume things in this field, learn for example what imperial ceramics look like.

Try this link as a possibility for an
answer to your question:

There are problems with the art market
and money laundering is one of those problems.
Not to say that this was the case for this sale, but it has become a concern for any one who sells fine art. When an item sells for
10 times more than its asking price it means
that whoever evaluated the piece in the first
place was wrong, or the buyer saw it paid
10 times more value than the seller asked.
You raised the question, only so many answers.

Chinese Republic porcelain items are hot right now.
Check out peter combs' excellent site bidamount.com , or his youtube videos where he comments on recent ebay sales , including the vase that went for nearly $100,000.

I also came across the youtube videos by PL Combs a couple of days ago, and wanted to add the links:

You're welcome. Glad you liked it. He also mention the artist's name in the video, and after searching around for a while I finally found some relevant information.

A comprehensive source of information on Qianjiang porcelain, which is the type of porcelain the cong vase belongs to, from Koh Antique:

http://www.koh-antique.com/qj/qjmain.html

The name of the artist, Jin Pin qing, appears in the list of some of the Qianjiang porcelain artists:

http://www.koh-antique.com/qj/qjmain1.html

And a search with google images using the chinese spelling of the artists name, 金品卿 (字浩), led me to an auction result at 1,012,000 yuan, against an estimate at 700,000- 900,000 yuan, for a Qianjiang cong vase by this artist:

Makes perfect sense to me. So the mystery is hereby solved, I guess ...

Also this cong vase with the elephant handles and birds on flowering branches by Jin Ping Qing, with a high estimate at RMB3,8M suggests that this is a motive particular highly regarded:
