Subject:Print/Ink Wash Drawing by Biyan?
Posted By: Lance Frazer Tue, Apr 04, 2017 IP: 2601:0204:4001:3df5:

As a follow-on to my previous post looking for help on identifying the artist of a print, I'm circling around with additional information I have found in the hope of learning more. The library director at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco has translated the title of this work (which he theorizes from my photos that may be an ink wash drawing, rather than a woodblock print) as "Masters of Landscape", and indicated that other elements of the script translate to "drawn by Biyan". As internet searching has thusfar yielded no information, I would ask the learned forum members if anyone has heard of an artist with that name, or using that as a pen name. I will be grateful for any help.

my first reaction is that this is a decorative picture relating to popular Daoism, Daoist immortals playing go, and that the name given by the artist, meaning "blue cliff", is a pen name referring the a popular old book of Buddhist riddles by that title.

A faint possibility is that it is by a painter from Fuzhou who was active during the first half of the 19th century named Gao Tihua 高體華, but that's a stretch without any other works by this guy to compare yours to. The seal does not support this notion either, though it is almost completely illegible.

Agree that it seems to be a painting, not a print
