Subject:Large Rock Crystal Chinese Interior Painted Snuff Bottle, Unamrked
Posted By: Kevin Tue, Mar 28, 2017 IP: 69.120.62.142

Hello All,
This is an early and well used rock crystal bottle, with skillfully painted detail in depth and coloration. The floral landscapes shed a purplish tint. Unusual with this level of painting, large size and material choice in that there is not a mark anywhere, giving credit to the artist or studio, or even a date
As unmarked on this scale, it would appear to have been a custom made piece, possibly for a court member, or possibly for the artist's own use, rather than from one who was practicing on a quartz bottle, and not a less costly glass bottle and leaving off the marks as such. A professional hired to paint a bottle like this would have only done what was required, leaving off the artistic credit, studio name etc.
I am interested in learning more from members on the early IP bottles done to this scale, material choice and depth of painting which are unmarked.
Concave lip, convex foot surrounded by a beveled foot rim,
Ht: 3 1/4" ; 8.3cm
Kind regards
Kevin

Side view images of the wrap around landscape scene showing more detail on the depth and the manner in which the trees and mountains were painted

This is a Shandong School inside painted snuff bottle with the ubiquitous landscape pattern. Probably early 20th Century. Glass, not rock crystal.

Hi,
Thank you very much for your post, I am glad to know the school.
As to the nature of the bottle, there are stone inclusions sitting below the surface in several places around the neck, last photo.
Also, there are none of the expected swirls or bubbles if it were made of glass

The character of the bottle shape, top view picture 3 is that of one that was handmade, possibly best suited in girth and rectangular shape for an expansive landscape painting
Kind regards
Kevin

Yes, these bottles were hand-blown from very thick glass. There are probably some bubbles and imperfections under 5x magnification. Snuff bottles made of rock crystal are very rare.
