Subject:Nephrite questions
Posted By: Tim Richmond Tue, Mar 28, 2017 IP: 50.80.152.131

This has been in my family since the late 1800's. My Great uncle worked for the U.S. government during the Spanish-American war, and brought back many things he acquired while in the Philippines. (This was among them) Before my aunt passed away, back in the 80's, she told me that this is mutton-fat jade, is from a Chinese Temple, and was carved more than 1000 years ago. Based on these photos, and in your opinion(s), is what she said accurate? Also, can anyone translate this seals' script? What kind of 'beast' is depicted in carving? What is it's likely value? Any help or info will be appreciated. Cheers

A relatively standard seal stone, possibly common low-grade ShouShan.

The carving is very badly done. The Family name Sun 孫 is on the left hand side, which is incorrect. Seals should read right to left not left to right.

The given names GuanZi 官子 are also crudely carved.

You could have the existing name ground off and a skilled seal carver recarve the stone with your name or a philosophic or poetic statement you relate to.

1000 years ago the jade carvers would have made a seal with precision, more balanced.
It is an old style writing, but very sloppy, it seems to be a name.
The pictures are of poor quality as well. It looks like a pink stone, perhaps it is in reality off-white?
