Subject:Shang Dynasty Bronze Cup?
Posted By: Narrow Road Wed, Mar 22, 2017 IP: 196.38.114.236

Hi All

I was wondering if any expert here could lend their eye to this piece. The seller claims that this is a Shang Dynasty Wine Cup which would make it 3000 years old.

Would it be worth the 125 000 USD/ 860 775 RMB?

the curl on yours makes it look like sheet metal rather than cast bronze. here's a genuine example that sold for a very high price:

That's just reduculous.
tell me something, how exactly would you make this cup out of sheet metal?
No I'm sure it's cast using lost wax. The only question is whether it's an original. Second castings are never as crisp. I would say there is a fair chance but the bent lip is a concern. At this age bronze is very brittle. Unless the damage happened originally, it would snap.

And you are willing to pay $125,000 for this "reduculous" (the word you are looking for is ridiculous, which I agree this thing is) "second casting" which has a "fair chance" of being "an original"? You have more money to waste than I do. The casting crispness is lousy, the relief decoration is not Shang in style, the metal of the lip is too thin, the legs are not even a facsimile of a Shang original, and anyone running a bronze workshop for the Shang elite who let this out the door would have had his head handed to him.

Rat, you are a paragon of reserve in replying to such an upstart. Anyone who asks a question of this forum and then scoffs at an honest and authoritative response in such a manner deserves to flounder in their own ignorance.
