Subject:Satsuma Chocolate or teapot
Posted By: Patricia Lasell Sat, Mar 18, 2017 IP: 50.135.37.247

I would like any information on this item. I believe it is Satsuma. It does not ring when I thump it. Is it a teapot or Chocolate pot. Have tried to research mark, with no success. Colors are not common for Satsuma, pink with yellow and pink cherry blossom design.

Hi Patricia,

The mark is Tashiro 田代 Zo 造 (made by Tashiro).
It has indeed different colors.
Probably from the 1st quarter of the 1900's.

About Tashiro:
Tashiro made distinctively decorated pieces, sometimes by Kutani trained artists, but also sometimes in Satsuma style.
The original name of the company was Tashiroya (variation spelling Tashiro-ya) located in Nagoya and began in 1878 by Tashiro Ichiroji. The company later came to be known as Tashiro Shoten (Tashiro Company) and changed their name to Tashiro & Co. Ltd. Located in Nagoya. The company produced mostly export porcelains, which were hand painted in the Yokohama studio on the blank, but the acutual vessels were made either Arita or Seto. The company stopped production in 1954.

Regards,
Martin.

Michael,

Thank you so much. You have given me information that takes me to the next steps of research and learning. Normally l do not collect Asian pottery/art; however l was drawn to this piece. Part of collecting for me is the history.

Sounds like it was made for export, so perhaps that may speak to the color.

Sincerely,
Patricia
