Subject:Please help ID Old jade lion
Posted By: Peter Sat, Mar 18, 2017 IP: 190.194.226.18

Hi, my father bought Asian art in a trip he made to Asia in the late 1950's. I'd appreciate if you could help identify age and origin of this lion, it feels heavy, solid rock, apparently jade, standing on a wood base.

If you think that this stone is Jade, make a scratch test:
With a strong needle, on a sound spot, use just enough pressure, make a small 2-3 mm scratch, Then tell us if the tiny scratch is black or white, and through this we can give you precise info.

Thanks Ernest, I have read about the scratch test, but I'm a bit afraid that if I don't do it well I might ruin this nice piece. Regardless of whether it's jade or not, most important is if this is fake or a genuine old item, and if so, what period of time and origin.

I did not say a 2-3 cm scratch, only a tiny scratch, and after you see the colour, you rub the spot with your finger, and you see it disappear.
Ernest
