Subject:Japanese large bowl
Posted By: Georgie Bamber Tue, Mar 14, 2017 IP: 213.122.195.254

Can anyone help me to identify this large bowl? I think it is Japanese and it seems very old, but I have no idea what the markings on the back mean. Any information would be hugely appreciated!

Hi,

Your bowl is Kutani ware, in my opinion Aka-e style (redbrown and gold).

The mark in the big rectangle says: Dai Nippon 大日本 (Great Japan) and Kutani 九谷 Sei 製 (made in Kutani). The characters in the left smaller rectangle spell according the Google translator: To Okina 陶翁 (Pottery).
The Dai Nippon might indicate a date approx. 1900-1925.
Regards,
Martin
