Subject:hokusai woodblock help- forum, stan guy

Good evening forum,
I acquired this Hokusai woodblock - 1835-36 Poem by Dainagon Tsunenobu (Minamoto no Tsunenobu, Katsura no Dainagon), from the series One Hundred Poems Explained by the Nurse (Hyakunin isshu uba ga etoki)
Tenpô 6–7, Publisher Iseya Sanjirô (Eijudô) Horizontal ôban. I am assuming this is a possibly very old recarved version, as none of the copies online have the writing in a horizonal format like this. Has anyone any information on this version? This is not a newer reprint. Thank you for your time and help.

I agree it is a redo of some sort. I did an image search with Google and it leads to your print on eBay, but, when I went to the page, I couldn't find the print. I assume the info was stale.

Cheers,
Stan

Hi Stan,
Thank you for your reply.
I can understand the recarving, but usually from what I have seen they were faithful to the original. I wonder why eliminate the cartouche and run the script horizonally? Any ideas on age? Seems to be an older Edo period reprint.

Anything I can say at this point is pure conjecture. It does happen. I bought of lot of 13 prints last weekend. Included are two Yoshitoshi prints from the series "32 Aspects of Customs and Manners of Women" that have been redone. They are missing 2 cartouches as well. Mine is below followed by the original.

Cheers,
Stan

This is indeed a Meiji era reissue/reproduction of the original Hokusai series, printed from newly carved blocks.

Guy.
