Hello, Can anyone identify the artist of this large 14 1/2" x 18 3/4" black & white landscape painting (the work is done on soft paper!). Any assistance would be greatly appreciated! Thank you! David.

I fear this is a copy of a famous painting, done by a student, who is probably of a non-Asian ethnicity. The signature, which appears to be Kai Pu Lin, and copied from someone else's writing (probably the teacher) is incorrectly written, and shows a complete lack of calligraphic training. The three characters are probably an attempt to transliterate the sound of the person's European name.

To demonstrate, I have written the three characters correctly if inelegantly.

There is also the chance that the signature (at least) was written in student grade liquid ink, which would account for the bleeding of the ink around the strokes. Bottled ink often contains dyes which are not stable and bleed, ground ink does not contain dye and additionally becomes waterproof when dry.
