Subject:From who is this japanese woodblock print, Utagawa school student perhaps .
Posted By: Mika Mon, Jan 09, 2017 IP: 86.81.160.184

Hello, I was wondering if anyone recognizes this woodblock print. I think it looks like someone from the Utagawa school, perhaps student of Toyokuni I 1769-1825. Kind regards, Mika

The actor is Iwai Hanshiro. The print is likely the middle panel of a triptych. I agree it looks like it might be a student of Toyokuni I, but am unable to confirm that.

Cheers,
Stan

If you look at how the actor's name is written on this Toyokuni I print, it is very close to your print. I might guess that the artist of your print is Toyokuni I.

The below website has a copy of your print. From what I can see in the picture of the back of the print, it is attributed to Toyokuni I.

See picture below.

I didn't notice in another picture that it is signed Toyokuni. I had a lot of trouble betting the website to accept cookies. I have got to stop answering these after 11:00 pm just before going to bed.

It looks like a Toyokuni II or III signature to me. I'm going to go out on a limb and say, since there is a kiwame censor seal, that it is Toyokuni II. Unfortunately, the round blob to the right of the unintelligible publisher's seal is also unintelligible. I can't tell if it is a date seal or what. Maybe one of the other print experts will chime in and help out.

See below.

Cheers,
Stan

Thank you for answering. If I compare the autograph of Toyokuni I with this one, its very similar. So I guess we found the maker. Thanks! Mika
