Subject:Help Identify Japanese Character Marks
Posted By: Marvin Sat, Jan 07, 2017 IP: 2601:02c6:4000:2ff0:

Hi,

I have owned a small bronze elephant sculpture for several years. I believe it is Japanese made because it has what looks like a signature or makers mark on bottom of elephant foot. Please tell me what these marks mean or what it reads? Thank you so much!

Marvin

Marked 'Seiya' (誠谷) - the Meiji era workshop in Tokyo of Genryusai Seiya. Please post an image of the whole object- this one could be a fake.

Guy.

Marvin,

Thanks for the picture.

I'm sorry but I don't think that this model was ever cast in the workshop of Genryusai Seiya, reputed for the highest quality bronze models (okimono)of animals. I ignore when or where your object could have been made, but I suspect that this is a Japanese or even Chinese fake.

Guy.
