Subject:Ming style Buddha
Posted By: Chris J. Sat, Jan 07, 2017 IP: 89.67.187.4

I have bought this bronze Ming style Buddha. Unfortunately some dumb person has painted it with silver paint. Scratched paint shows black patina. There are characters on rear of the figure. What means this characters? How is best way to remove this silver paint without removing of patina?

Your image apparently is a Tibetan style depiction of the Bodhisattva (Mortal Buddha) of Infinite Light, Amitabha or Amitayus. The Ming Yongle Emperor (1403-1424) commissioned a number of famous ones in same form during his reign, and Qing emperors participated in the same acts of faith.

The character on the back of this one is 位 (wei), meaning "seat" or "position", which might be construed as "throne" in this context. It is not a Chinese surname.

Acetone might be usable to remove paint without affecting patina, presuming the black on this image is patina and not the residue of lacquer used as a base for past application of gilt. You could test a spot on the back to determine whether using acetone causes such harm. Maybe others have better ideas in this regard.

Good luck,

Bill H.
