Subject:Small Javanese ? brass container. How old ?
Posted By: Steffen Saabye Thu, Dec 29, 2016 IP: 87.60.72.184

I bought this small, Javanese ? brass container some years ago at a flea market. I guess it's for spices or tea ? My guess is that it's from the second half of the 20th century. But is it possible to date it more precisely ? Can you tell me more about it ?

Hello Steffen, a late reply.
It is a brass/bronze betel leaf container from Java. It was probably part of a set. It was made during the first half of the 20th century in the Wayang style. The Wayang style is based on the Javanese shadow puppet theatre. The plays are mostly based on the Hindu epics Ramayana and Mahabharata. The Wayang character on this one is likely to be Arjuna, a hero from the Mahabharata, and favourite because of his noble character.
